About 1 in 5 Americans participates in at least one of USDA's 15 food assistance programs at some point during the year, and Federal outlays for these programs account for over half of USDA's total budget. ERS studies and evaluates many aspects of these programs, including their outcomes and effects on vulnerable populations, their operations and integrity, their role in food security, and their relationship with the general economy.
