The 55th District Court has jurisdiction in Ingham County, Michigan, except the cities of Lansing and East Lansing. The judicial staff includes two District Judges who are elected on nonpartisan ballots for a term of six years. The judges have appointed a full time attorney/magistrate and three part time magistrates to assist in judicial duties. The District Court building is at 700 Buhl Ave., Mason, Michigan.

is a court of general jurisdiction, hearing civil cases and controversies seeking damages in excess of $25,000, all felony criminal matters, and all family matters. In addition to hearing felony criminal matters and civil matters, Judges of the General Trial Division of Circuit Court also serve as Judges for the State of Michigan, Court of Claims. Judges of the Family Division have jurisdiction over cases involving juvenile delinquents, abused and neglected children, adoptions, name changes, emancipations, parental consent waivers and domestic relation matters.

On November 1, 2002 the Michigan Supreme Court Learning Center opened its doors to the public. This 3,800 sq. ft. public education center introduces children and adults to the Michigan court system. The Learning Center is designed for students from the fourth grade to adults and the gallery is filled with activities including an introductory video, computer programs, push-button programs and traditional wall text panels.
