One very special person has been his wife, and then there have been the numerous multi-faceted musicians whom he has encountered, like his producer Daron Steward whom Cunningham met when both were attending college--Cunningham at Michigan State University and Steward at Western Michigan University.

The Old Town BluesFest is a two-day FREE music festival that brings local, regional, and national acts to an audience of roughly 15,000 people from across Michigan and nearby states. David has received a number of commissions including those from the Fromm Music Foundation at Harvard University, the Verdehr Trio and Michigan State University and another from Duo46, among others. He has also received a number of honors, including awards from the International Society for Contemporary Music (ISCM)/Miami Section, the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, ASCAP and Duke University, as well as fellowships for residencies at both the MacDowell and Yaddo colonies and at the Aspen Music Festival.

The Great Lakes Pride Band is a Michigan based LGBT and allies band organized in 2006, currently has current membership of 15 instrumentalists to play and march for pride parades, concerts and other important community events.
